⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As an aesthetic, grotesque challenges societal norms and expands the definition of beauty through distortion and deformity. Its roots are in Middle French and Italian. With an almost vain interest in its history, Rome began excavating ancient buildings during the Renaissance and uncovered decorated grottos (caves) containing art depicting distorted humans and animals combined with unusual fruits and flowers. By 1561, the Italian word grottesca, which was used to describe this specific art style, had transformed into the English word "grotesque."
Lost Boys and Fairies is grotesque: written by Daf James and released as a three-part miniseries in 2024, Lost Boys and Fairies will twist you into knots of laughter and tears, into an open scream of haunting beauty. Forged from trauma, as many of us, the series will ruin you if uncovered.
Sion Daniel Young plays Gabriel and Fra Fee plays Andy, a gay couple of eight years living in Wales. They are in the early days of adoption, a process that requires the hubris of Rome and the excavation of our deepest grottos. A process that, frankly, needs more light in the zeitgeist as panels and bureaucrats play God, forming families out of what is too often despair.
Four out of five stars.
