The American version of British Channel 4's Utopia was released to great anticipation in September 2020 by Amazon Prime. The original began its journey in the UK in 2013 and quickly gained recognition for its unique visual style, memorable soundtrack, and complex narrative, earning a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's mix of dark humor, sharp satire, and thought-provoking social commentary carved out a cult following that eagerly awaited the American version and it's hopeful conclusion in a never-made third season.
The American adaptation faced mixed reviews from critics. The appeal of the original Utopia's mixture of conspiracy theories with real-world issues that explored societal constructs and the darker side of human nature could be found in the American version. But we added a uniquely American spice: violence. Like us, Utopia's characters are morally ambiguous, challenging us to reflect on our own values and decisions just as critics and the series' writer, Dennis Kelly, also had to wrestle with. In Kelly's own words regarding the violence and critics' reaction to it: The constant debate is about killing people, so I think you do need violence because you need the violence to tell the extreme of the story.
Jessica Hyde (played by Fiona O'Shaughnessy) sets the tone with her complex backstory and fierce determination, mirroring today's zeitgeist of conspiracy and the quest for truth, a reality that resonate across continents, showing that the concerns raised by Utopia are universal.
