Have you ever been in a situation where your life was truly in danger? Those seconds or minutes when your fight or flight instincts take over your body? Your breathing speeds up to fuel it with oxygen, your heart races to pump energy to your limbs, and your digestive processes cease to conserve the same. Your eyesight and hearing sharpen, intensely focusing on the danger.

Your mind fights with itself, the emotional trying to assuage your fears, questioning, “Is this really happening?” While your logical mind screams:

“RUN!!!”

The End We Start From is that moment in the medium of film. Mahalia Belo, known for her work on Requiem and The Long Song, directs with an impossibly perceptive touch. Her choices show no fear.

Jodie Comer (of Killing Eve fame) stars as "woman," the extremely pregnant wife of "R" played by Joel Fry. Benedict Cumberbatch bought the rights to The End before the book, written by Megan Hunter, was even published. He described its story as "a stunning tale of motherhood [and] a striking and frighteningly real story of a family fighting for survival that will make everyone stop and think about what kind of planet we are leaving behind for our children."

Cumberbatch also costars in the role of "AB," a widow not willing to forget the "before times" that were only days behind them. Alice Birch's screenplay allows us to float on the surface, only to be pulled into the dark, powerful undertow of her pacing.

As you watch the opening scenes of this film, note the directorial decisions like the bath filling up until the candle is extinguished. Note too how Comer embodies that moment of fight or flight as the score rises around her like the flood waters you don't want to believe are real.

“RUN!!!” “RUN!!!,” I screamed silently through this 2023 suspenseful thriller, now streaming on Hulu. I strongly recommend it, giving it five out of five stars.
