Testing a whitening strip on my teeth is akin to testing a moisturizer on an alligator. I started smoking at 19 and drinking coffee even earlier. That's 38 years of daily staining from just two of my bad habits.

Maybe you, with your gleaming white girly teeth, will see better results. But my tests (see video of me trying out the strips below) left me feeling disappointed.

I used the strips daily, along with the whitening gel also by hismile, which isn't shown here. The process is pretty straightforward. There are daily packs that contain one combination of upper and lower strips. You simply dry your teeth with a towel or washcloth. Do not be like me and think, "Teeth can't be dried, they're in your mouth," because you actually can dry your teeth. And this step is crucial to ensure the strips adhere to your teeth.

You'll peel off the strips, one at a time, and place them over your upper and lower teeth. It should be obvious which strip is upper and which is lower. Next, gently press the strips down, ensuring a snug fit onto your teeth, so the purple gel disperses over the teeth they cover (strips only cover your front teeth).

After thirty minutes, remove the plastic strips from your teeth, leaving behind the purple gel. Rinse and brush off the gel.

I'd like to point out that this purple gel contains only a small percentage of the oxidation materials you would receive if you went through your dentist for a home whitening kit. The dentist-provided home whitening kits include a mold of all of your teeth (including your back teeth) and come with a stronger oxidation agent, which you can refill as needed.

These kits are costly and necessitate at least two visits to your dentist's office. With my insurance, the out-of-pocket expense was about $250. That's a big difference and the reason these over-the-counter types of whitening strips are so popular.

The gel used in these whitening strips is not only not as strong as the gel from your dentist's office, but the recommended time that the gel is to be left on the teeth is much shorter. With hismile strips, the recommended time is 30 minutes. The recommended time for the home whitening kit is overnight.

And finally, the color of the gel is not an accident in the hismile strips. Purple is a complementary color to yellow (opposite positions on the color wheel), so it blocks or counterbalances yellow tones in the teeth. This phenomenon is short-lived. And the effect most likely lasts only a few minutes after rinsing off the gel.

In the long run, if you can afford it, I recommend opting for your dentist's home whitening kit. But if price is an issue, then the hismile strips provide a short-term, slight improvement to your smile.
