Shira Haas as DC Iris Maplewood in Netflix's Sci-Fi thriller, Bodies (2023)

Called Cadavers in Britain, Bodies (streaming now on Netflix), was released on October 19th, 2023 -- my birthday. It was a good gift.

You've got mystery, Science Fiction, British actors, time travel and a gay love story. I couldn't have asked for more.

The premise of the movie is that a dead body, in 1890, suddenly appears in London on Longharvest Lane. And again in 1941, 2023 and 2053. The same dead body.

Based on a graphic novel by Si Spenser, Bodies is directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner (director of 2007's drama Trade). He has a tough job. Four different eras, four different sets of characters, and a script that inevitably runs into problems with paradoxes and plot. It is time travel, after all. And even physicists haven't figured out how it can be done. So, I'm cutting Bodies the same slack I give to every story about time travel. And I'm just going to suspend my disbelief and focus on the characters, story, acting and directing. And this show checks every box.

It's a large cast, with a lot of outstanding leads.

Amaka Okafor, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Kyle Soller, Shira Haas, Synnove Karlsen, Greta Scacchi, Michael Jibson, Gabriel Howell, Stephen Graham, Derek Riddell, George Parker, Amy Manson, Michael Shaeffer, Jonny Coyne, Alexandra Roach, Mark Lewis Jones, Kate Ashfield, Anna Calder-Marshall, Matalie Gavin, Kae Alexander and finally, of course, the dead body: Tom Mothersdale.

All of whom have outstanding performances, but it was Kyle Soller as DI Alfred Hillinghead that I fell in love with.

Great cinematography, sets, costumes, writing and CGI rounds out the rough stone and creates a delicate beautiful and enjoyable jewel to be placed in Science Fiction's crown (Sci-Fi is the king of all fiction. There, I said it.).

It's five out of five stars for me. I think you'll enjoy it.
